A burning question (OR THE SECOND FOOTIE THREAD)

Postby Methil Liz on Mon Jul 02, 2007 6:53 pm

Hi, my name's Liz and I'm from Bristol. I've been viewing the Haver pages for a while now and have plucked up the courage to join in. You may wonder about the Methil bit of my username - it's because my maternal grandparents were Scottish - grandad coming from Methil.(gran was from Shotts but it didn't sound right).
Anyway, my burning question is this: Who was Hibs goalie at the time of Cap in Hand? It's one of those useless bits of trivia that I need to clog up my brain! On the subject of Football - Ivan Sproule - A good buy or Ivan the Terrible?

Hi Liz,

First, welcome! No courage needed to join this lot. Just join right in.

And second, what on earth do you want to know that bit of trivia for?? Can't help with details, but that's a really unusual question.

Thanks very much for the reply. I thought it would be a goalie that I'd heard of, just couldn't think who!
Our local paper has the headline 'Ivan the Terrible' to turn over new leaf, but wingers are always temperamental aren't they? He'll be interesting to watch anyway.

Hi Liz and welcome.

My football allegiance in Bristol is for the other team, Rovers.

Went to see them in the play-off at the New Wembley. Great day out it was.

Having said that good luck to Sproule but I can't wish good luck to O'Connor at his new club, I'm afraid.

Hi Pauline, my second cousin plays for the gasheads (alledgedly) seems to play more often for the reserves! My brother and his eldest son went to Wembley but my sister and I are conspiring to take the youngest son down the Gate this season. He's ten and we think we can brainwash him. So if Sproule can be a star this season the boy will be ours!

Hi Liz

What's your second cousin's name?

Are you sure you will get away with taking your brothers youngest to see City? I can't imagine anybody trying to turn my boys into anything other than Villa fans - mind you they're 25 and 15 so are now true Villans.

Some friends of ours are life long Gasheads (which is why we've adopted them as our 3rd team) and Mike was their Managing Director for a while until he and some other directors, fell out with the Chairman.

Do you have a season ticket?

Pauline, my second cousin is Andy Sandell. The funny thing is that when he signed he told the local paper how all his family were die hard Gasheads when we knew for a fact that his maternal Grandad (my uncle) was and always has been a City fan! I used to have a season ticket back in the late eighties, early nineties, but gave up because of ill health and it was a hell of a lot of money for sitting on a wooden slatted seat watching third rate football. As another uncle once said, 'they didn't come and see me when I was ill' But now both me and City are 'well' again I might be tempted back for the odd game. I know , it makes me sound like a fairweather fan but there you go, with prices as they are you have to pick your matches.

Cheeky lad, that Andy. Good luck to him.

Glad to hear that you are 'well' again and hope you continue to be.

I don't think you are a fairweather fan (and you can hardly be called a Glory hunter  - nor can I) circumstances change in life and we can't always do what we want.

Hope you get to a few games next season. You might find once you've been to one or two you want to go to them all.
